| The Worcestershire Symphony Orchestra gave
its first performance on 14th May 1949, under the baton of its founder, Eric Holt, but
it is worth noting that the orchestra's roots can be traced back to the "Worcestershire
Orchestral Society" of 1905. One of the founders of this society was Sir Edward
Elgar. During the 1990's, the
orchestra has strengthened its position as Worcestershire's premier Amateur Symphony
Orchestra, following a consistent policy of appointing only professional musicians to the
positions of conductor and leader.
The partnership with University College
Worcester provides the orchestra with excellent rehearsal facilities, and an additional
concert venue. In return, WSO is able to offer free membership of a full Symphony
Orchestra on-campus to students of appropriate musical standard.
The orchestra has a firm commitment to high
musical standards, and this, together with the congenial social atmosphere which
characterises the orchestra, should ensure its successful entry into the next millennium.
